I ordered mostly clothes from the USA. Including delivery its coming up to around 190, that's after converting it from dollars to euros.

I presume I would have to. How does it work. Is it a % of what I ordered. It's better to be prepared. Thanks.

A usual rule of thumb is about 30% of the dollar and postage cost. But you could be lucky and not get caught for it.

Yes 23% plus a customs charge averaging about 30%

That's just for VAT. There's also duty if the order is greater than €150 in value (including postage), plus the handling charge by the delivery agent. All in, 30% is usually a close approximation. Duty rates vary, depending on the goods in question.

If the delivery is by courier (UPS, DHL, etc) then you are guaranteed that the import charges will be applied, and the handling fee will be €15+VAT. If it's by post from USPS to An Post, then there's a chance of no charges.

Thanks for this. It is being delivered by USPS, so I presume its An Post that will handle it once it gets here.

Going by what I ordered, its a big package, there is no way, an post won't let it pass. It's been a few years since I went mad ordering off the internet but I think they can also demand payment also.

USPS is usually the best option. An post have a €7 handling/admin fee which is lower than most couriers. There is a max couriers can charge, think its about €15-16. USPS is usually the cheapest so the vat paid on the postage is lower.

The couriers seem to catch everything. Some poster before said this is not the case, but I have read far too many reports saying otherwise, including my own experiences.

i.e. he was saying it should make zero difference if delivered by regular post or courier. I don't think this is the case at all, it would be my belief/guess that an post have limited staff and so let stuff just over the limit through.

I also guess that they would have people set up to process consignments from places like play.com as it would be far easier to process charges where all the documentation involved is of the exact same style.
