Probably a stupid question but just wondering if it is possible to invest money and buy shares in companies in lieu of a pension and qualify for tax breaks a pension would have? Any input appreciated

Yes, look into Self Administered Pensions

Davys direct ,provide self administered pensions I think ,have a look c ,can't vouch for them ,never had an acc with them .
Whom ever you go with ,watch the fees, they may seem small ,but compounded over years, decades ,they can end up colossal .
Don't sign up with anyone until you research the sh1t out of it ,and read all the small print, and know exactly what your getting ,and more importantly ,what their getting, for your money :D.

P.S ,the definition of stupid ,is someone who doesn't know something, but won't ask !
