In an Insurance pickle...

    Any advice gratefully appreciated!

I'm in a band, we are on the road this weekend and our van driver is sick. I said I'd take over because I have open insurance with Aviva. Rang them up this morning to find that they will not cover me to drive the van for the day.

Question: Is there any place that would insure me just for a 24 hour period?

Enterprise car/ van rental is around €50 for a day.

It would be my very last resort as they are only in Dublin & Cork. Would all or most rental companies cover insurance or would I still have to change over? Thanks for that!

Some can be sticky on age of driver.

It is sometimes an extra depending on company and all sorts of extras.

If you do have to resort to renting a van just call before booking online or email about any hidden extras some are good at that..

Can the van owner add you to the van policy for the day?

Transfer the whole policy over, or get your name added to the van driver's policy.

Named driver would be the best route.

Best option or get yourself added permanently, shouldn't cost too much, sometimes nothing at all.

Tried the original driver's insurance to put me on the policy for the year and they will not put me on unless I'm working for him :(

is the van a business vehicle? It might be because of this that you cannot get on his insurance (nor get your own transferred over).

No the van is not a business vehicle. The driver is in the band as a member but we had to get a fill-in for this weekend. We usually use his van and thought nothing of me driving it as I have open insurance but according to the driver's Insurance company - Unless I'm working for him e.g builder/carpenter they will not put me on the policy.

My own insurance company - Aviva first told me it would be no problem to get insured on the van for a 24 hour period and then came back to tell me they wouldn't cover me unless I was moving house.

    It's a balls of a racket!

Just to add insult to injury, Enterprise have no vans to hire this weekend in 2 locations about 25 KM from us

:pac: They even asked me for an address and I just said forget about it

The day's are gone were you could just give a quick buzz to them and say I'm driving this or that for the weekend - Yeah no bother!

Our driver/bass player is being resurrected for the weekend. Tough as oul boots he is :)

Thanks all for your help, really appreciated it!
