Hi guys. I have a Peugeot 206 (1.1L) which just failed the NCT. It failed the retest on front tracking - out on both sides. Anyone have an idea of how much this will cast to get re-aligned, or wheres the cheapest in Galway/Athenry area?

I just replaced a ton of other stuff in the car and cant afford to have it fail again. NCT is a rip off.

    Thank you

Are you sure it failed on tracking, I do not think NCT test for tracking, unless it was visible to the eye. What exactly does it say on the fail sheet ?

First off, Thanks for the quick replies so far guys.

Regarding the testing for tracking, like everything else, they put fancy names on everything. They call it Side Slip/Alignment test. My readings were Front Axle -24.0m/Km. The limits are Outside +14 to -14 (m/Km)

I had previously failed on front ball joint on both sides (something that I seem to have to get done every second year because Peugeot are a heap of crap). The whole wishbone on both sides needed to be replaced just because the rubber seals on the ball joint gets cracked and cant be replaced separately. I got a friend to put in the new wishbones but he doesn't have the equipment to check the alignment/tracking afterwards.

I also had to replace the front brake discs and pads, and also get the rear brakes adjusted because they were sticking. Needless to say, the parts so far have cost me a small fortune. and this is the 3rd time going in for the test. 28 euro i think is a bit much to retest on tracking, something they can do in less than 5 mins. I'm not made of money, so need to get it done somewhere cheap. anyone know anyone on east side of Galway who doesnt cost an arm and leg?

    Thanks

I would think you have bottom balljoint or track rod end issues, you should get a Mechanic to check this for you ,I do not think tracking will resolve this issue.

Thank You for your answer but I dont think you have read the post Davy. I just replaced the Wishbone on both sides. Ball-joint is part of the wishbone on a peugeot, so it needs to be realigned after being installed. The tracking hadnt failed on the original test so it is only out because of the replaced wishbones. The actual rod ends failed last year and were replaced then.

As already mentioned, I had a friend install the wishbones, but he could only line it up by eye. Basically he had to guess if it was aligned properly. Unluckily for me it wasnt. So there is nothing physically wrong with the cars hardware now other than having the tracking realigned properly which is just a fine tuning adjustment that requires specialist equipment to do it, something he doesnt have. I need to know is there anywhere that does it cheap on the east side of Galway please?

Speculating as to what else it might be serves no purpose. Thank You

You are correct , your post re replacing bottom wishbones came in after I posted my reply, hopefully tracking will sort it for you,but with a side slip of -24/km I would be doubtful. On the issue of wishbones failing after such a short time you must be driving over very rough terrain or cheapo wishbones.

    best of luck with it

I think you hit the nail on the head - cheapo wishbones and rough terrain. I drive on Irish roads which have a lot to be desired in my neck of the woods and the peugeot 206 has a very common flaw in its wishbone design. It isnt the actual wishbone, its the seal on the socket that gives the problem. The rubber cracks on the seal and cant be replaced separately. Frost, salt on the road, vibration, water and oil are all contributing factors to the degenerating factors of the rubber seal. NCT fails on visual inspection of the seals.

But to be honest, this car has done very little mileage over the last 2 years, no more than 3,000 miles. Its only used as a run around for my missus to use going to the shop a couple of times a week. They shouldnt have needed replacing this fast, even if they were pure rubbish cheap junk (something they were not).

Hopefuly I can get someone to sort this cheap enough, else its a box of matches for this i think. Costing me a fortune in parts so far

Tracking will sort you out but to be honest all you have done is replace basic wear and tear items, I don't see the nightmare part? what brand were the wishbones that failed? you get what you pay for with suspension parts. It sounds to me like you prefer to run your cars on a shoe string and complain when they need anything at all. My opinion of course.

Thanks guys for all info so far. But the original question asked was if ye could recommend anyone that does it cheap on the east side of Galway?

You are correct rex-x, I do want to run this car cheap as I already spent a small fortune on it in recent weeks. Similar cars of the same model year can be bought for 500 on donedeal. It would therefore be very foolish to go spending any more than is needed to keep it on the road, and its not the cheapest junk that i have been throwing into it either.

So far I have been quoted anything between 25 - 100 euro to get the tracking done in different parts of the country. What I'm looking for is a location on east side of Galway that does tracking cheap and the price they usually charge for this service. Thank you

seems like you would buy parts from paper the way you are going, decent reputable parts cost a bit more than generic ones you get but you get what you pay for as mentioned above. Many people neglect suspension and tyres when they are one of the main parts of a car. FWIW tracking does not cost much, you wont need full camber/castor/toe alignment i don't think so I would be surprised if it cost more than 30/40euro

    100euro for tracking on a 1.1 206 is havin a laugh, seriously.
