    Hi,

Starting a new build soon and just doing some of my own research. As part of new building regs I know galway co co want a concrete cube test done at time of foundation pour. I'm just wondering what the exact requirement is and who can perform this test for me.

    Thanks

While pouring foundation concrete, usually, two samples of the concrete are taken and put into 150mm cu. steel moulds -google concrete cube moulds.

Once set, the concrete is removed from the moulds and sent to a specialist company to test the compresive strength of the concrete at 7 days and then again at 28 days.

Make sure you are on site during this process as many groundworkers will take sample and then add a load of water to aid workability. This has a big effect on strength

    Thanks guys,

Who is out there that performs these tests? What is typical cost? 100's or 1000's. Are moulds ready available?

Your eng will advise or should really take responsibility for this test

BryanF I am not ready to appoint engineer yet. Trying to do a bit of research into this test i.e. process and cost .

    Starting a new build soon....

    What stage are you at?

A concrete cube test probably costs in the very low E100's? But, I don't actually know, as I write it into specifications that the builder carries out the test (included in their overall cost).

Really your builder should have the concrete cube moulds...as inevitably they will need them for every job. Cost of the moulds in the region of E 60 each.

But you cannot start without an engineer or at the very least an AC Assigned? Whoever you choose should arrange for this test IMO.

Your cost of arranging and doing this will be higher than using an engineer and suitable contractor.

    Who is your Assigned Certifier?

He or she will have a big legal input into this equation.

    That is a strange request!

The cube testing is to test the compressive strength of the concrete. Its done at 7 days curing when the concrete is at 50% max strength and at 28 days when the concrete should have cured to full compressive strength. Its simply to ensure the concrete strength is as ordered. For example if you order C30 concrete when fully cured the compressive strength should be 30 Newtons or higher. Basically the concrete cube is crush tested and it should fail at a loading higher than 30 N
