I have admin'd a facebook page for my local community for the past 5 years. Basically promoting local events, happenings etc etc and had nearly 3,000 followers who could also post whatever they wanted, advertise events, post photos etc.

It was a great community resource especially for emigrants and those whose ancestors came from here etc. logged in today and get the message that as it wasn't an account for an individual perosn it would ahve to be converted to a 'page' as in business page etc. I did that and when the new page loaded it was just that, a new page, everything had disappeared, had no likes/followers etc, 5 years of posts, photos, memories, rows, debates etc all gone.

I had received no notification form them that this was happening. Absolutely sickened. Rant over.

If you contact them they might be able to migrate your page friends across to the new page. Unfortunately all previous posts and photos etc will be lost. This happened to a page I was admin on a couple of years ago but I had contacted them first asking them to merge the "friend" and our new business pages. We only lost whoever was duplicated.....might be worth a shot?

If you want technical help this is the place, as the AH mod said.
If you just want to vent then neither forum is really the place.

No I just emailed them explaining we had two pages and one was a personal profile page which we now understood shouldn't be used for business. They emailed back saying they would merge them but we'd lose all the posts/photos etc from the personal page.

Sorry, but this bit is just not true.

You got a terms and conditions when you signed up the account for the page, which clearly said that it was for a person. And it would have been pretty clear you were doing it wrong when you were asked for the gender and birthdate.

Facebook may not have given you a specific warning.

But there have been plenty of other warnings out there. All manner of social media experts have said many time that Facebook profiles are for flesh-and-blood people. Facebook Pages are for businesses / organisations / clubs, use the right sort, of you will face having Facebook close you down. I cannot count the number of times I've heard this from different places.

Also, if you had over 3000 "friends" on the profile then you will definitely have seen some others send out messages like "We're converting to a page, please some and Like us over here".
