    Hi,
Local exchange is now fibre and up and running, I'm 3.5-4km from exchange but only get 2mbps download, the sane speed as before the upgrade.
Would this be normal or should I get a speed increase?

Call your providers tech support line.

Are you sure your fibre has gone active yet?

Unless you are close to a fibre enabled cabinet then nothing much will change

would my speed not increase up to even 5-8mbps since the exchange is upgraded?

No, it still depends on how far you are from the exchange but, at peak times with heavy traffic it shouldn't get any worse for you now.

So basically the fibre roll out map is false advertising. the whole area that is covered by an exchange upgraded to fibre is presented in a way one would believe that its available through out the whole area, when in fact its only in the town itself.

Wonder if rural areas will ever get proper broadband? im only 4km from exchange, im not in the bog!

I'm in the same boat as you, about 4km from the exchange outside the village. But I got lucky, as I have a beautiful line of site to a wireless broadband provider. I'm now getting 20MB opposed to less than 2MB at the best of times with Eircom. Where are you located?

How is it false advertising when the map clearly states
"Please note: this map is for illustrative purposes only and not all homes within the eFibre area can avail of the service."

The map is fairly useless but false advertising? Nope.

I'm afraid you are at least 2KM too far away from the exchange to get anything. You are still using the old ADSL connection. eVDSL (exchange eFibre) is not something that will benefit you at all.

I think you're misunderstanding what fibre is. Fibre is to the cabinet, if you haven't got fibre you're not going to see any speed difference, other than less traffic as someone pointed out.

You sound as if you're still on ADSL, nothing has changed for you exchange wise. You need a fibre cabinet within Xm of you and to upgrade to fibre.

Fibre to the home is coming, that should be far less distance dependent, I imagine it's going to be expensive to install though.

eFibre(vdsl) is available for many lines now that are direct fed to the exchange. He probably noticed that his exchange went live for it recently. Of course you still have to be close enough to avail of it.

Nope. Not quite. Everyone on the really sh1tty exchanges gets a boost when EVDSL arrives.

I thought VDSL was to the cabinet?

I thought it was a copper line to the cabinet then fibre from there to the exchange. I can't see how a copper line from a home to a cabinet would be fibre?

    Happy to be corrected.

Really? How so. I thought you just stayed on the same crappy equipment while the others where on new kit.

They get switched over from radio(12-500Mb total, high latency) to core fibre(10Gbps+, low latency). So that 4Mb but 0.2Mb at peak times becomes a 4Mb line all the time line.

    Hugh thread on it here.

vdsl equipment has been installed in many exchanges recently. This is to bring the service to people that are not connected to a cabinet but are direct fed, the usual vdsl distance limitations still apply of course.

Of course vdsl is over copper but Eircom call it eFibre which is misleading name.

    Thanks for the education!

OP hope it gets better for you. Have you made sure you're plugged into the master socket etc.

No problem. So there are many happy people who were near cabinets but not connected to them and instead direct fed to the exchange. These people can get vdsl now.

Unfortunately there are even more unhappy people that hear the great news that their exchange has been upgraded only to realise they can't get eFibre due to distance from the exchange.
