1999 Civic EJ9 - speakers buzzing

I picked up a bangernomics Civic last week. The paintwork is shot to hell but mechanically it's in good order. All it seems to have needed to get through the NCT was a brake service (done yesterday, re-test on Saturday).

In the past couple of days I've noticed that the speakers are intermittantly buzzing.

The head unit is a stock tape-deck which I'm planning to swap out for a second hand one from adverts that has CD / aux in.

I'm guessing the speakers are more likely to be at fault for buzzing than the head unit though? Any pointers on identifying the root cause? Are breakers a good option for speakers or do I really have to buy new?

I've never done any more to a car stereo than replace a head-unit or tighten some wires on some aftermarket rear speakers which were installed in an old civic I had a long time ago!
