Getting Back A Herd Number?

My father retired from dairy farming back in 1998 and whatever retirement scheme he signed up to he had to surrender his herd number. Now I'm pretty sure he said the money from that schemed dried up a few years ago (probably 08 or 09) so I was just wondering would it be possible to get that herd number back relatively easily or would we have to apply for a new one?

Ps, my father still owns the land, he just has most of it set out to a tillage farmer.

I think you should just apply for a new one in your name.
Your father won't be able to get one again as he got early retirement scheme and is supposed to be retired

I wouldn't mind getting one of my own, but it will cost a few quid because we no longer have the facilities required to pass an inspection.

The reason I'm curious about whether or not we can get the old herd number back is that I think his pension money ran out earlier than stated so technically the early retirement scheme didn't really hold up their end of the bargin if you know what I mean.

I'm not sure what faculties you need nowadays it used to be a shed to hold a sick animal and a crush for testing.
Probably be best ring dvo and ask them. I thought your dad would have to pay back money paid in retirement scheme if he went back farming again if so it would have to be done in another name whoever is farming it.

Ya you need a shed to house a sick animal and a cattle crush. You also need to fill out a er1 form to reactivate or apply for a herd number. The department inspector will probably come out to you to check everything is ok once all the paperwork is approved.

Ok cheers fir the advice, I think I'll just apply for one myself to be honest, seems like it might be less hassle, or even could I apply for a joint herd number between myself and my father?

To apply for a partnership is the er1.1 form.

Huntergonzo think this link might help with getting a new herd number.
