Import Duty / VAT for shipping my bicycle from Australia to Ireland

    Hi,

I’m returning to Ireland from Melbourne and I want to ship my bicycle. Does anybody know what import duty and VAT I'm liable for at customs in Ireland when it arrives? The bike cost is over $2400 when I bought it a year ago and I've lived away from EU/UK for 3 and a half years.

I contacted the courier to ask and received the following reply:

"Please be informed that, as long as those item that you are sending are used personal effects & owned more than 12 months and adding to that, if you have been out from the UK/EC for more than 12 months, will surely qualify you to get the Duty & tax relief."

This sounds encouraging. Has anyone any experience with this type of thing?

    Cheers,

First of all have these 2 documents with you :
Sales invoice or receipt showing amount paid including taxes /duties for bicycle
Also a copy of P45 or whatever document is to prove you are no longer working in Australia .

Also get form for C&E 1076 and have it filled in .

Once you can prove you have the bike for more than 6 months and the above criteria ,you should be okay .

Allthe doyles is correct in his advice. If you bring the bicycle in as part of your other personal effects (or even on it's own) and fill in CE1076 (Transfer of Residence) you should have no difficulties bringing the bicyle in without having to pay tax and duty. Important that you have the invoice and the other documents required as per CE1076.
