"Last week George Osborne increased the tax incentive for homeowners renting out rooms.
It may seem like a tiny change but it’s a massive win for renters - here’s why:
    • Encouraging more people to rent out rooms means more supply - that keeps rents down
    • Flatsharing with a homeowner is £74 cheaper per month on average - that’s a saving of £888 over a year
    • There are 19 million empty rooms just in England - freeing up even 5% would mean almost a million more affordable rooms to rent. That’s the equivalent of a city the size of Birmingham
We’ve worked hard to make this happen and have had support from key tenants' rights campaigners like Shelter and Generation Rent along the way. It took us six years but we finally got the government to listen!"

Well done to all those hard working people in the UK who have a proper rental market. Love looking at their country and admiring how they just get things done and done right.

So did Enda Kenny part his hair to the right or left today?

In Ireland, you can rent a room in your home and it will all be exempt from income tax.

I said this in a super-efficient German accent. We laugh at weak British tax reforms.

    Ha.

I have four empty rooms in my house, I'd be lucky to rent them out for a carton of milk a week.

There is a €12k per annum tax free allowance in Ireland under the Rent A Room scheme OP, you are obviously unaware of this.

The point is, they've done something to try ease the burden on the rental market. My question goes unanswered. Was it to the left or the right today and who was nominated to stand behind him and stare into the camera while he recited a few bullet points?

It's not a case of want, as with many things in Ireland in the last decade or so...

Your question ignores the fact that the Irish Government have in place a far more generous scheme for home-owners who rent a room, or rooms, in their properties.

    This is bizzare....

A point about Brits getting tax free to rent spare rooms

And a question about enda kennys hair in the same post which are seemingly unrelated??

and funny the way you accused others of not answering something.....

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Rental income from renting a room in your home (and related services) is exempt from tax, up to a maximum limit of €12,000 (or €10,000 in 2014 and previous years). Where more than one person is entitled to benefit from the rent (for example, you and your spouse), this limit is divided between the individuals concerned.

In Ireland you can rent a room tax free up to €12,000 per year. In the UK Osborne just introduced a similar scheme up to a maximum of £7,500 (€10,600) per year. Don't like the facts?

I haven't been proved wrong at all my disguised friend. Premise of the thread is that the UK have done something to help their current rental problems....whereas Ireland in, what can only be described as dire need of some sort of policy changes to help it's rental market has done nothing. Whatsoever. Instead, emmm? Where's Enda? Oh he's on big sus....again.

Bandiying about a figure that's lesser or greater than the other proves nothing without examining the macro and micro economics of the situation in their contexts. Some answers here are laughable, only because the posters expect themselves to be taken seriously :pac: like you for example.

      What contexts, specifically?

In your OP, the only taxation item you referred to was the homeowners' tax relief, which you were jubilantly praising. As it transpires, this relief is already more generous in Ireland.

What new "contexts" are you now wishing to add?
