Motorist yielding to bicycles on Dutch roundabout

Cool video feed Monument. The majority (if not all) of major suburban roundabouts in Ireland should take a leaf out the one in the video. Nice grass verges to separate cars and cyclists, nice and comfy entry/exit angles for the larger vehicles and most of all, safe and beneficial to all road users. :D

This is a completely different World to Irish roundabouts!

And the proportion of motorists who drive as well. In the Netherlands, I would suspect the majority of drivers also cycle, whereas at a guess I would imagine the opposite is the case in Ireland.

Wow, I literally just turned it on and saw a car coming off the roundabout yield for two cyclists crossing.

Light years ahead of Ireland - and to be fair the majority of the world.

Unfortunately Cycling in the Netherlands is totally different. It's not an issue just with roundabouts, but kerb separated Cycle lanes, Tracks and intersections etc. Also the Rules of the Road in the Netherlands.

You must be educated as a child on the rules of Cycling, and must get a road certificate before being allowed cycle on a road or Dedicated Path. Usually around 12 years old. There are heavy fines for Cyclists breaking the rules as well as motorists.

The result is, the cyclists respect the rules of the Road and the Other road users (including pedestrians) respect the cyclists.

We could do that here, but it requires expenditure in Infrastructure and education for everybody.

Did they not try something like this at the Killiney Towers roundabout and then had to row back to a more normal design??

It wasn't quite the same. The cycle lane was on the roundabout in Killiney.

The design used at Killiney Towers is not comparable to the one in the opening post. The Killiney Towers is similar to an older Dutch design which I'm told is not used anymore and never used on roundabouts of the large size of the Killiney Towers roundabout.

One of the main elements of the more standard cycling-friendly Dutch roundabout design is -- like the one in the YouTube live stream -- space between the cycle path and central circular roadway. This allows for better lines of sights for users of both bicycles and for motorists, and it usually also allows for at least one car to yield in the central area without stopping another traffic which is continuing around.

I've read also that the roundabout in the live stream isn't the most up-to-date design, I'll post more if I find it on that.
