Hi, not sure if this is the correct thread. Have ordered a new car and am using the old one for scrappage however the one I have ordered is special order and won't be ready until October. Problem is that the car to be scrapped needs to go at the end of this month. I have the use of another car that has been off the road for some time as it has not been needed but has been kept mechanically running and it's fine however the NCT ran out a couple of years ago. It even got a full service last month.

I'd like to use this car in the interim from August until October but I just checked the NCT site and I would not be able to get the car tested before the end of the month.

Is it likely that I can be insured on the interim car without having an NCT, if I can supply them with a reference number to show that I have applied for the test?

    Cheers

Probably not but do contact a few insurances companies and see what they say.
Keep checking NCT site every night after 11pm for next day cancellations. Have a look at centres in neighbouring counties, if not too far.

I'd be more worried about penalty points if you hit a checkpoint with no NCT, it's 4 points, showing the booking receipt might get you off with the right Garda but they don't have to. You should check the conditions of your insurance policy, some specify valid NCT, some don't.

Thanks to you both. Yeah, I want to to try do things by the book and the last thing I would want is to run foul of the law. I know for a fact that the car is in a road worthy condition (well unless there is some hidden fault that I have not yet found) but I can hardly say to a guard "Here's the booking reference for the NCT I am waiting for but the car is grand" - That wouldn't sit too well.

I may try go down a different path where I know everything is above board. Best to be on the safe side :)

all depends on the insurance company, last 2 companies I was insured with, having a valid nct to insure the car was not a requirement

I'd do a full check on the car that all tyres are road legal without cracks and that every single lightbulb in it including rear reg plate lights work, if she appears perfect to the naked eye it's more likely you will get off if you have it booked.

Where are you based OP? I found that by going into the individual testing centres around Dublin I was able to find a booking for the following Saturday easily enough. It meant a drive to Deansgrange rather than going to one of the nearer test centres but it seems fairly easy to get a short-notice booking around Dublin at least.
