    Hey all,

Whats a reasonable amount of time to go from a paypal dispute to a claim ?
Dealing with an unhelpful crowd who I've been chasing since Thursday last. I had to lodge a dispute yesterday in the hope that it might light a fire under them to start answering emails. They're in the UK so there isn't a time difference or anything.

I assume I'm not being mental in expecting a 24 hour turnaround on an email ?

It all depends I usually wouldn't open a claim until the 44th day then I would usually give a seller a week or two to reply but it all depends if your dealing with an individual say selling stuff on his own who I would give more time to or a big company with 100 or so people answering phones / emails everyday.

cool , I'll keep that in mind.
Does a paypal dispute cause problems for the seller ? or is it only when it gets turned into a claim ?

As soon as you open the dispute whatever the amount is it's over is deducted from the sellers account.

Ouch , that can be a real kick in the nuts.
I thought that only happened when a claim was lodged.

No as soon as the claim is opened the money is taken and if the person has no money in their account then it turn into a negative balance and the dispute was over €20 and they wanted to pay for something that cost €10 they would have to pay €30. It is a really unfair system because so many abuse it and it is totally biased because they always decide in favour of the buyer even though the sellers are the ones who pay the fees.

good lord. I used to run a small shop online , and we used paypal. there would have been days that would have crippled us.
So at that point you're as well off just getting the goods back , give a refund and pretty much black list the user I would imagine.

Since you started the dispute yesterday, I would give them a couple of days to respond. Two or three should be enough. If there's no response at that point then escalate to a claim.

If you've already tried contact the seller directly for several days, and they've not responded at all, then I'd even say go for a claim right now. I certainly wouldn't be waiting anything like 44 days for something that hasn't arrived or a seller that's ignoring my requests for information. That's just crazy.

When you open a dispute, you have 10 days to close it, or put in the claim. Otherwise it closes automatically and you cannot re-open or submit a new claim later.
