If it's from a prior tax year it goes to you directly. If it's this year and you are currently employed, then an amended tax cert issues to your employer allowing them to refund you any overpayment through your wages.

It was for last year! i would have thought it goes directly to me aswell but my employer says that they should get it as they paid my taxes for me??

No. They don't know what they are talking about.

They are obliged to stop whatever tax is due on your wages, before they pay it. This is put aside, and remitted over to Revenue. This is your tax - you pay it. They just collect it on your behalf.

Revenue will pay it to you directly, in cheque or bank lodgement

Not sure what your employer is on about there. If they are confused tell them to contact the employer's helpline in Revenue.

Is it your employer , or the person in the employers wages office that is giving you this info ?

It is possible for your employer to prepare a new p60 and file an ammended p35 with revenue and therefore get the refund. this is not normal procedure but it does happen.

just wondering did your employer pay you on a nett to gross basis (ie employer agreed to pay you 400e every week and they paid whatever taxes were due). If that's the case, then ya the employer would get the rebate.

but its rare enough now for employers to do pay that way.
