Setting up sat motor

I've read throught this thread on satmotor/multimotor setup.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057231205&page=12

    Very helpful input from Watty.

It's been a while since I used my sat motor. Now i want to set it up again with my current receiver. It's already mounted - just needs some tweaking/mating with receiver.

I've sussed out how to set up my sat motor with the Amiko Alien2.(Hyperion 4.5)

It an SG1000A with DiSeqC 1.2.

But I'm a little fuzzy on the initial settings.

    I'm in Cork, I'm at 8 West.

The nearest SAT is Atlantic Bird 5W - presumably the one to find first as being highest in the arc.

I'm three degrees west of that....If I point directly south - I miss it by 3 degrees ?

Do I set up the USALS info first (say Lat. 51.9 N & Long. 8.8 W) and then

physically move the bracket/dish/lnb/motor so that at it's 0 degrees it points directly South(0 degrees) .

and then using the setup on screen get the motor to move to (in my case) Atlantic Bird 5 W

    or

Do I line up the motor so that at it's 0 degrees it actually points to 5W by physically rotating the mount/dish/lnb ?

When last I set it up , i did not use USALS. I did the manual search and store method (different receiver)

Would appreciate some comments. Maybe I'm getting too old for this :o

Think you linked to the wrong thread?

Anyhow, I've never actually set up a motor myself but, if you're going with USALS (settings entered in the receiver of course), & you have the motor elevation & dish declination set correctly, you can pretty much drive the motor to any satellite you want for alignment purposes, although tracking accuracy might vary, depending where you choose.

Some would recommend one close to south, others more towards the edges of the arc. See here: http://www.techtir.ie/howto/install-motorised-dish (Watty's site, I believe.)

    Yes :(
I did link the wrong thread ....

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054988801&page=2

    Should have done the above.

I did read Watty's page on the subject.

I've read so much at this stage......
My question still has not been answered ... more reading .......

While pointing at 8W and getting a signal , should the motors scale be set at 0 physically on the hardware and should the USALS screen show 0 Degrees or 8W as it's position ?

    Having re-read Watty's comments on
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054988801

    item #5 - I think I have it now :)
Only peak dish elevation signal at 5W. The motor will be at zero ONLY if your co-ordinate is 5W. I'm close to 8.5W so the motor is nearly zero (due south ) near Limerick City / Cork City /Mallow etc when 8W is selected (not much signal).

Simply put, as I understand it, you get the 1st stage of physical setup right: perfectly vertical pole, proper motor elevation & dish declination; then USALS setup in the receiver; then drive the motor/dish to your chosen setup satellite, & 2nd physical setup is to align the motor/dish assembly on this satellite, maybe with a bit of further tweaking of the dish elevation/declination, as you mentioned.

    Thanks again :)

As you say 'simply put' - very clear .

There are a lot of very strong transponders on 5 West, like 11591 V 20000, 17.5 dB with me, 1.1 m dish. I think it is better though to use a weaker transponder to fine tune the dish. 11569 V 5969 is 12 dB.

There is no broadcasting to Europe on 8 West but there are strong feeds every day at present for the Tour de France. You can check the daily listing on Satelliweb.

I can't offer any advice on the practical side, as I got my dish installed by a professional.

    I've made some progress :)

Got it working with Spark - 5 sats lined up.

Can't get it to function with Enigma HP 4.5 ...

I may stick with spark for the present.

At least now it's clearer how it is supposed to function.

    Thanks again :)
