Diesel dying

    Hi
Looking for opinions on a problem with my 2003 peugeot 307 1.4 hdi, high miles but was running superbly til it started to cut out, generally when at a stop at traffic lights or similar situation where the revs dropped and stabilised at low revs for a period of time. Pressing the accelerator would make zero difference to the revs and the engine would stall after 7 or 8 secs. It will restart instantly and drive perfectly. It will not happen every time that I come to lights or a junction. My mechanic reckoned the pressure sensor on the rail was the issue and last Sat attempted to replace it but the the replacement sensor was incorrect so back on with the old one. The car is running worse since the sensor was removed and replaced cutting out much more often. It will be another two days before a replacement sensor arrives. Would anyone out there have come across this problem before or would have an opinion if the sensor is the correct way to go. On the road it drives perfectly, no issues with acceleration, very light on diesel. Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks

Did your mechanic pick up any fault codes..?
If the rail pressure is dropping then the first thing i would do is replace the diesel filter that's if it hasn't been replaced in the last while.
Could also be a sticking egr valve as they don't away's bring up fault codes.

    Thanks Row
Filter was replaced about 18 months ago, I loosened the bleed screw to clear any water, just got a dribble for a second or two, expected more. I switched on the ignition then to prime the pump and tried again but got the barest of a dribble. I thought that I would get a reasonable drop out of it, would that point to a filter problem. I have heard of the element collapsing but am not sure if this is an old wives tale

18 mths is too long between filter changes, its not just water but all kinds of slime that the filter catches.
Block enough of the filter surface and it won't flow any fuel.
I change mine every 6 mths for peace of mind.

    X2

Op..The diesel filter is constantly filtering the diesel in the tank so it needs to be replaced second service or so.

So far so good, filter fitted yesterday and running ok so far, fingers crossed it may have been a cheap fix. If it does'nt work I will advise.
    Thanks all
