Irish resident and living in the UK

I am an Irish citizen while my wife is a non-EU national with residence here in Ireland (stamp 4). I may have the oppurtunity to work in the UK for 6 months, and am wondering whether my wife can come with me and live in the UK for a some if not all of that time. I contacted the British embassy here in Dublin who referred me to the UK visa and immigrayion website, awaiting an answer from them but I guess it may take time.
I know from travelling through the uk while living here my wife is always asked for extra proof of residence in ireland, and even when she provides her gnib card, most UK immigration officers haven't a clue what it is and spend 5-10 mins on the phone verifying that she is indeed resident. Can she come with me and live in england for the 6 months, or is a border run required every 1/2/3 months?
    Thanks
