I know there is a thread here about petrol or diesel but i have a more specific question.

I am selling a diesel mondeo which i have had for just over 2 years. Ive put just over 10000 miles on that. I do little run arounds in the city mostly and get down the country once or twice during the summer which is a 2.5 hour drive down.
Im looking to get a mpv/people carrier and like the nissan qashqai.(1.6 petrol or a diesel?)

Am i better buying a petrol vehicle or a diesel. Id be looking for an 09/2010. Diesels seem to be very dear and alot of Upkeeping.

    Thoughts and advice please.

For your driving petrol all the way.

Anything 07/08 upwards will break your heart and rob your bank account with your low yearly mileage and city driving.

Its only worth buying a diesel if your driving long distance and motorway driving

agree with reply above...we bought a diesel MPV about 8yrs ago...first couple of yrs it was getting driven but then started to be only used around the town, lots of stop starts and eventually the costs mounted with it...

The diesels are great on fuel. The only thing getting me is the price to tax a petrol.

What is the major price differences in maintaining a petrol vs a diesel? Do diesels have to be serviced more often?

    Thanks

Your doing such tiny mileage so fuel costs should not be a deciding factor in your choice. Also diesel engines take longer to warm up than petrol engines so they will not be that more fuel efficient if they are constantly being used for short trips. Then you have to take into account things like particular filters which need long drives for their regeneration cycle to complete, otherwise they get blocked and need replacing.

Do yourself a favour and stop reading headline grabbing huge savings running a diesel. Your mileage and driving style don't warrant it.

Tax on a petrol 1.6 Quasqai is €570, diesel 1.6 is €280 but if you are purchasing a 2010 model the petrol one is at least €1000 cheaper to purchase.
