I'm a waitress working full time in a restaurant for the last year and a half. I have no contract. My hours are being reduced because the bosses have hired a Member of there family. I have a applied to go back to college but waiting to see if I get a place. I was working 35-40 hours I am only just getting in or around 25 hours I know that if I leave I won't receive social welfare but I'm extremely upset and feel the situation is going to get worse. Less hours... Do I have my options? Any advice would be brilliant... because I'm very upset. Thanks

I was told at work that come September my hours would be reduced and I would be getting no more than 3 days a week!! It's the only money I make, surely were entitled to some sort of benefit?

    Do you have kids?

If so you could be entitled to FIS.

If not, try calmly asking you boss if you can have set days as you will have to find alternative work to cover your expenses. This should raise alarm bells, if you start somewhere else and they see how good you are, then they might lose you.

If there's no way you'll get 3 days a week, then ask for dinners only (I'm sure they have the newbie on lunches while they train? ) that was you could pick up cafe work.

They could either lose a good member of staff during peak season due to an new person just in the door.

I'm sure like most places, you get called in at short notice to cover absence and peak business, if your working somewhere else, this wont be happening.

This should remind the boss not to lose a good thing.

Really that's you only option, find another job to fill in the gap in your pay or just find another job altogether.

Under the Working time directive 1997, you do have a contract, as you have worked 35hrs plus for a period of time, your contract is 35 hours per week. The problem is without a union its very hard to enforce this, you just have to hope that the employer wouldn't like an employment inspection form NERA.

I am 25 years of age & am from a small town. I am single &don't have any kids. I have applied to go back to college in September. my hours are normally 1pm til close which is normal anywhere between 9pm-11pm which was 5days.. now they are 5pm-9pm or 3til close 4 or 5days. Which is significantly different. Its a difficult situation because I am a hard worker and have bent over backwards for my bosses. I cant survive on my hours now after tax but because my colleagues are now taking holidays in the next few weeks my hours will go up &down come September they will be nonexistant. Because the busy period is over.no contract so they don't care. Hoping go get college place.
