As an example look at what is done to the archive footage from 1990 about 1:30 minutes to 3 minutes into last Saturday's 'Saturday Night with Miriam' on RTE1

    http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/show/10441936/

RTE's archive footage have had 'effects' to make it look like old degraded amateur Super-8 film

What is the point of this and why not broadcast the archive footage in the best possible quality rather than degrading it ?

Usually to hide the fact that the archive footage mightn't look great anyway on modern ( HD for example ) systems and/or sometimes broadcast quality footage isn't available

    Sometimes it's just "I'm a pretentious dick "

this bit! Its like the way digital colourists are ruining tv drama and feature films.

Think broadcasting 4:3 footage in cropped format to fill a 16:9 screen is just as bad. Most of RTÉ's archive is in decent quality black and white or colour 625 line video tape, so why the unhistorical mucking about?

It's just an edit. You could ask why they put a soundtrack over the footage.

Captioning and graphics are always removed from news reports.
