NAME CHANGE AFTER MARRIAGE

Hi all - Myself and my wife got married in April 2014 and have the certificate etc.

She's going to get a passport in the near future and was hoping to use her married name. She's never legally changed it from her maiden name, but calls herself with the new surname.

Any tips on the next few steps she could take to use my surname legally?

    Thanks for any input.

This is what she needs to get the passport in her married name.

To change the name on my bank account I took the marriage cert into my local branch.

She can apply for a new passport in her married name if she wants to. You send the marriage cert in with the application. But you'll be paying for a new passport.

You don't need to legally change it by deed poll. Just the Marriage Cert is all that's needed.

I got married a year ago today! I'm only getting around to changing my name now. Your wife just needs to show a copy of your marriage certificate to change her name on passport/driving license/bank account, arc

Names in Ireland are common usage, so there is no changing it legally.

Passport office will take marriage certificate.

We're in a similar situation ourselves, my wife wishes to take my surname.
I haven't found a straight answer to this but does it matter which surname(s) the couple used on the marriage cert?
Eg. Tom Ford and Mary Kia get married using their 'original' names to fill out the paperwork and later both wish to change to double barrel surnames.
When seeking to update bank, passport, driving license are institutions just looking for proof of marriage and justification for the name change or that you actually married with that name?
I feel it's the former (given common sense and common usage law), but can't find a clear confirmation from Citizens Information, HSE or the Passport Office link.

Names are very woolly in Ireland, so basically you just start using the name and it becomes your official name once you can prove you use it.
Get a few things changed over (household bills, maybe your rental contract) and use those and/or your marriage certificate to change over the more official documents.

Note 2 on the passport guidelines - http://consulateofirelandwa.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/PassportApplicationFormNotes.pdf
    basically covers it.

Other countries are far more strict.

Do you have to pay for a new passport if you're changing your surname following marriage?

Of course you do. Why wouldn't you? It's not like it's a legal requirement.

I asked because you don't for drivers licence. Thanks for answering, no need to jump to debate on it.

I can't see them processing any legal document for free these days...are you sure it's free for a driver's license?

It's free I only got mine last month - you don't get a new 10 year one, you only get the amount of time that was left on your old one. So mine has my new name on it but is valid only until 2019.

Well it's not.unfortunate. I'd imagine it costs a lot more to process a passport than a driver's licence. And as it's a choice to change your name I don't see why anyone should get a new one for free.

Really? I didn't know that, I was going to hold off until it needed renewing in two years time.

Drivers license is free to change address or name. AND you get the swishy new card style instead of the paper one. :)
