VW Engine Management Light

I've a 2008 Passat 2.0tdi CR engine. Just passed NCT with no problems.
Problem is the engine management light keeps coming on every few days and it goes into limp mode and can't Rev past 3000rpm. If you pull in stop the car and restart the fault goes away.

I've had the car at my local independent Garage but he can't find anything wrong with the car.

Any advice or ideas greatly appreciated.

GO to vw. There must be a stored fault on the system your mechanic cant read

You chose wrong garage, more than likely.

Find one where they're able to read all codes. :)

I had similar problem in 2010 Passat. The fault was with solenoid valve which apparently is common issues in Passat. The garage should be able to identify quickly if they have correct diagnostic kit.

I got it sorted in Naas, cost was appx 450 euro

    Good luck

You need to get it scanned for fault codes and go from there.
Anyone with vcds can do it, I'm not far from you and could do it some evening during the week.

If it happens again when driving at speed 50+K and you cant really stop(certain situations can occur), just turn your car off as is, maintaining speed and gear position, absolutely no need to do anything but just turn the ignition key to off and then back on, car will 'reset' as if you just pulled over and restarted...... This is not a 'cure' this is just a temporary solution and a stress relieve to pulling over..... I could talk all day about limp/safety mode, don't get me started... Hope you find the actual issue.

You need to get it read for fault codes. But if no fault code is showing up it is likely it could be the boost control solenoid acting up. I have had alot diesel cars have this problem including VW, Audi, BMW and Vauxhall, and it never showed up as a fault on the diagnostics. When the solenoid is acting up it can cause the car to overboost which will put the car into limp mode to stop it doing any damage! If it does turn out to be this i would avoid buying from main dealer. I priced one for my Vectra and they wanted €220, i later found a company in the UK selling the exact same part, genuine GM and everything for €65 delivered!

    Thanks for the advice.

Funny thing is the car only ever does it when going at low revs around town.
On long motorway trips it never happens.

    No problem ;)

meant to say that aswell, usually with the solenoid giving trouble the car will usually go into limp mode when driving easy through the gears, as in town and also when driving under load especially uphill
