I'd be really interested in starting mountain biking and I was just wondering if there are any trails in or around Laois, also any tips for a beginner?

Can't help with areas around Laois, but for tips, this might be of some help.

If you have yet to buy a bike, try and get the absolute best for your money, mountain bikes take a lot more abuse than normal bikes, look for one with a decent front fork, and respectable components, research some of the bikes.

There's a few different disciplines too, depending on what you want to do will help you choose the bike, if you're looking for smooth flowey trails and singletrack without jumps and heavy technical sections then you won't need a long travel full suspension bike, for example.

Get a decent helmet to boot, some elbow and knee pads, it'll help the confidence at the start.

bike park isnt far just outside roscrea good place to start. Youll prob bump into a few guys who can advise where to go. Seeing as all trails are unofficial youll need to talk to someone
