    Hi,

    Quick question.

When construction a garden patio you have 6 inches of hardcore, 1 inch of quarry dust and paving slabs.

Is there any needs for weed cloth, surely no weeds could grow up through all that.

Dont want to leave out if required, but dont want to waste time and money.

I assumed all weed-cloth did was block light etc to the weeds, all the stone will do this anyway.

    Thanks for any help.

Weed seeds manage to grow through soil, which also keeps the light from them until they sprout, so I doubt that hardcore etc would be any different. Many times I have laid paths etc by laying 1200 gauge builders membrane immediately beneath the slabs (available from builder's providers). That stuff is polyethylene, and no weeds will ever grow through it. A €30 roll will cover half a county, so it's a low-cost option and, I find, much better than the geotextile sold in DIY stores

Weeds will grow in the small gaps between the slabs and not always thorough the hardcore. I personally don't think there's any way to stop them and it's more of a bit maintenence every now and then.

This would be a better way to lay paving slabs

fred funk nailed it. They'll need maintenance regardless. Tiny particles of dirt will eventually accumulate even on resin based pointing and little weeds will appear. It's just nature keeping you on your toes!
