1.4 TFSI VAG engine with DSG?

1.4 TFSI VAG engine with DSG?

Anyone have experience of this petrol engine with the DSG transmission?
I have this engine with manual box in my A3 Saloon but I'm wondering if it would be a good combination with DSG?

I'm considering a VW Passat or new A4 for 2016 and the petrol 1.4 +DSG suits my needs but does it make for a pleasant drive?

I would have thought they'd be a perfect match. I have only driven the tfsi in manual too mind.

Aren't you underwhelmed by the 1.4 tfsi in your a3 though. A Passat or a4 would be a bit heavier again.

It's the 140 PS version of the 1.4 I have in the A3 and I find it brisk enough but it lacks low-down pulling power. It might indeed be a little underpowered for a Passat or an A4 though.

How often do you change your car?

Test drove the new 150bhp version in a mate's 2015 Golf, has the deactivate cylinder thingy thing to save on fuel. Was surprised how punchy it was, felt like it had a bit more than 150bhp. DSG is a lovely gear box and suits the engine really well.

    Every 2-3 years.

It would be tough enough to sell one in a Passat/A4 size car. Doesn't make sense but very little demand for petrol in this segment these days. You would be killed on resale. It's really a car you would want to keep long term to limit depreciation.

I have a 1.4 TSi DSG in a 09 octavia and I love it. Plenty of poke and for my type of driving it costs the same to run as my previous car, an 07 tdi octavia. No big bills yet which is also lovely. .. I have it a year and a half after doing about 16000km

    122. Single turbo no supercharger.

It's all relative then. The op has a 140bhp and finds it could be faster :)

Not quite....It's plenty fast, just a little short on torque at lower revs.
I think it does the 0-100 kms bit in around 8.9 secs, lots fast for me and top speed - I don't know but it's plenty fast for most people.

The op says he feels it lacks low down torque more than speed. I can honestly say I'm surprised at how much low down torque mine actually has. I thought I'd miss that when I changed from diesel but it's not lacking in the least. Maybe the ecu map is different for the DSG models.

Nail on the head, tippman1. Those tiny modern engines with turbo(s) might be fast enough (on paper) but they all lack severely in torque. In real life they save you money on fuel, can keep up with traffic, but they are very slow to get moving from stand still. And for me that is the one point that counts most. I need torque at idle revs. Not at 1500rpm. And no, at this point in my life I do not want an EV either :)

A remap would make a big difference to the low down torque.

Mine doesn't lack torque at all, but sure what would I know I only drive one...

I've driven a couple of Passat 1.4 DSG rentals and they were pretty good. The gearbox makes the most me the power and torque available from the engine, in a way you can't replicate with the manual.
