    Hey, long story short:

I finished college, got bachelors in comp. science.
I was gonna continue education into masters degree but out of nowhere I got called in for an interview at IBM (I didn't apply).

I attended interview, and been waiting back from them for a month, in the mean time I made application to DIT masters degree where I got accepted, I have till 17th of July to confirm my place else it goes to someone else.

So 7 days left, IBM HR emailed me today asking for scan of passport with identification details.

Does this mean I got the job?

I want to ask them will I know the definitive status of my application by 17th of July but I don't know how to put together decent question so it doesn't sound like I am being pushy.

I wouldn't give a scan of my passport to any private company unless I had accepted the job.

Yeah sounds like they may be trying to vet you. This should only be after a job acceptance though and contracts signed etc

I didn't get or even see contract yet.

as others said, I wouldn't give them anything until they give you a yes or a no regarding the job offer.

After I attended interview, they asked me to make official application via website so that my application is on the system.

I can only assume if I wasn't accepted they wouldnt' ask for it?

I would love to ask them specifics about my application but it seems a bit pushy.

If the employer was Dodgy Joe's Computers, then I'd agree with the others.

But if you're sure that it's IBM who you interviewed with and are giving the scan to, then I'd go ahead and give it to them - it's very likely they're preparing to offer you a position.

Yes it was legit, if it was fake company then I can imagine it would cost quite a lot to build massive campus that I've attended for an interview.

OP, Ring HR - tell them you recently sent in your application and passport details and were wondering if they are planning to make you a job offer. Meantime i.e. on 17 July, accept college offer - they can offer it again if you dont arrive in September. Worst case scenario you are in neither place - position yourself for both.

Since they asked you to apply for the job via their website, you can actually go back and check the status of the job application

I am checking it every day, it says: Under Review.

The problem with accepting offer is that I must pay 300 Euro non refundable deposit to confirm the place.

But then again, 300 Euro is nothing if I end up getting the job.

The other half had to do something similar for a job with GE, it took several weeks for the really detailed background check to complete.

Does the email from whomever at either Recruitment or HR have a contact number, if so I would try and contact that person and see what is going on.

BTW are you on Linkedin by any chance ? this is how they might have got your number for the job in the first place

I think it's just for identification purposes
I've attended interviews where I've been asked to bring my passport with me.
Worth giving them a ring just to confirm.
    Best of luck.

I had to send a scan of my passport to an online casino in England (verify true age and identity) to collect winnings. Pretty usual in that world and all came good.
There is not a lot that can happen and as you say, I sincerely doubt anybody has faked a campus interview, impersonated IBM just to get their hands on your passport details.
Secure the college place - the company may stump up the fees (if job related) at a later date even if you need to defer the course this year.

I doubt you have the job at this stage. It is more likely that you have been short listed and HR have been asked to verify your details. Before they can offer you a position they need to confirm that you are in fact entitled to work in Ireland hence the request for a scan of your passport, which by the way I'd have no hesitation in forwarding to them.

Concerning your course, I'd give them a call and explain the situation to them. It will not be the first time they have encountered this situation. And I'm sure they will do their best to get you feedback ASAP.

    Good luck by the way.

I used work in IBM they want to confirm you are entitled to work here, then you will be asked to do a medical then offered a contract if all goes well

Remember that many employees at larger multis are not Irish citizens.
Requesting your passport is a simple way of confirming eligibility to work in Ireland.

If you are confident that it is IBM that you are talking to then I would go ahead.
But no harm in making contact to determine what stage in the process your application is at.

I think regardless of nationality, you have to produce id now, it's like "know your customer" processes with banks

If you wish the college option to be open to you, then you should accept the place on 17th. Nobody here can tell you when or if the company will offer you a job.
