3.5km - 4km from exchange - slow internet forever?

    Hi,

My house is about 3.5 - 4km from the exchange I believe and I get around 4.5Mb up 512K down (sometimes the router says 5Mb up, sometimes 4...) - I try and following the broadband section on here but my head starts spinning after a while with all the technical details.

Basically - will I ever get eFibre or am I just too far away?

My home is in the dreaded Amber section for the National Broadband Plan by the way....

    Hi Nyum Nyum
would you mind PMing your exact postal address or current landline if you have one? I would like to confirm we have correct exchange.

Thanks for your PM Nyum Nyum

I've investigated this and clashed my findings off with plans for your area,

As you are aware the distance of your line to the exchange is unfortunately too far to avail of download speeds faster the up to 5Mb.

I cannot see exactly where your house is on the map but if you go to this link and click on "NGA fibre broadband network" then zoom in on macroom you will see a few coloured dots and if you hover over them you will see their status. The dots themselves are cabinets which your line must be within a 2Km distance to be able to get efibre. You can also measure distance on the map.

    Thanks
    Al

Hi Alan, thanks for the reply.

I understand the whole thing about being within 2km to get eFibre - but I really meant to ask about the future, things like Fibre to the Home - will I ever be able to get anything like that?

On the wholesale map I am pretty much halfway between Macroom and now this marker which has popped up:

    CARRIGANIMMY

eircom's FTTH 2016-2020 rollout programme with speeds up to 1Gb/s includes premises in this exchange area."

....and of course I'm about 4km away from that! So is that me out of luck forever basically?

    Thanks

    Hi Nyum Nyum

I would love to offer you a realistic expectation however It's not possible to say for sure until the FTTH works are completed to be honest.

The only good news I can offer you is that there have been reports from the government stating that areas not covered by FTTH will be included in a strategy to be upgraded to download speeds of 30Mb - this strategy is not managed by eircom but you can find out more here: http://www.broadband.gov.ie/

    Thanks
    Al

    Hi Alan,
On a similar subject so I won't start a new thread, but I'm 2.5kms from one cabinet and 2.9km from another one, they're the two closest to my house. However, even though I can accept that I'm outside the 2k limit for Fibre, why is Nyum Nyum getting nearly 5 down and 512 up when he is 4 km away, while I can bearly get over 3 down and hardly anything up? Surely being a good deal closer to my cabinets should yield better results?
My area and all surrounding ones are all now green, so all cabinets are fibre.

    Hi Tea 1000

I understand your views on this however the VDSL (Fibre) cabinets have absoloutly no impact on speeds for lines which can't avail of eFibre - it's different infrastructure. Distance from the cabinets is in relations to Fibre and distance from the main exchange is in relation to Normal broadband (DSL).

    Thanks
    Al
