Hi all, I'm looking to get a tow bar fitted which is only for a bike carrier. I've been quoted around €350 supply and fit. Does this sound reasonable?, I was hoping for a bit less to be honest!, before fitting it myself is suggested, that really wouldn't be up my street!

Not a DIY effort, moved to main forum.

    Location OP?

Sorry, Dublin. Just had another quote from a main dealer for 350 so it seems to be the norm. The other quotes were from Towing equipment and Malcolms. Don't really know of any indies to try so guess this is the going rate.

The tow bar was stolen off my car a few months ago.

There must be a market for second tow bars.

Be careful where you park your car when the towbar is fitted; ensure you reverse into a space up against a wall, where possible.

There are two different types of towbars, fixed and detachable, and of course different brands too.

Never get one in a main dealer, there are many companies that will supply/fit fully type approved aftermarket towbars, most main dealers just use aftermarket units that are rebranded. I know for a fact that Lexus use only Brink towbars.

If you are just fitting a towbar to mount a halfords bike rake, don't bother with the wiring kit and save a few quid. Get the cheaper non-detachable type as it prevents other drivers kissing your bumper in tight car park spaces;)

Prices will range too, shop around!

If possible get the tow bar from junk yards they sometimes have them .
I got two tow bars for different cars I had from junk yards and fitted them myself .
If you never did it before pain in the neck as they all seem to do it different ways so can while to iknow the logic
Not all cars have holes pre drilled so might need to drill holes also

I only use the tow bars for bike carrier use and never for towing but it is its done to towing standards but never tested the tow bars out .

I normally get tow hook for €50 second hand

online towbars exist mostly UK sources often for about €120 delivered

Yes €350 is the going price from tow bar operators

    Good luck
