    Hey Lads,

Heading down to play Rosses Point and Strandhill the weekend with a bunch of lads, just wondering does anyone have any course tips or pointers as ive never played either before?

I know they were recently changing the course layout in Rosses Point, has this work been completed? Is the course better or worse for these changes?

    Thanks in advance.

Played Rosses yesterday. Some thoughts - all below depends on wind of course

1 - everything feeds right into bunkers. Play short of bunkers to be safe

2 - Long iron or hybrid left side of fairway away from bunker is good

4 - Missing pin high left is fine but right leaves a very tough up and down

9 - Better long than short due to bunkers.

13 - Be careful not to take too much club as loads of danger long

14 - The drain is in play if wind not hurting. I went in with a 3 wood yesterday. Line is over bunker but just don't be greedy

15 - Play short of bunker and you will have decent second shot in

17 - I have no idea :D ...tough tough hole. Good luck

18 - Short hole so hybrid would do. 10 yards right of white stone that is marker (off whites) is the line. Straight over it seems to bring left rough into play

    Enjoy !!

Stay out of the rough in rosses it may look ok but really grabs the club.

    In Strandhill:

1st. Line is just over the left hand side of the rough everything falls down right

    3. A good line is at the tree beside the green but can bw tight depending on the wind so the red stake is the safer line either

    4. everything rolls towards the right hand side so try going slightly left of the fairway, too left there is a bunker

8th. Hit an iron and aim just left of the grey house. Or a wood into the wind but wouldn't recommend the driver

    11. Very quick green try land it just short on approach

    13. the white house in the background is the line for the green. if your downwind I would hit a wood/hybrid it gets quite narrow if you hit it big with the driver.

15th. try not to be long on the drive makes it very hard to get it up in 2. if your downwind could go for the level below the green.

17th feeds in to the green from the left side but green is quite fast so a lot of balls run off the back. short and left of green is the perfect line.

    Enjoy!!

Thanks for the replies.. update on how we got on.

Played Rosses Point Saturday afternoon in probably the worst conditions ive ever golf played in... lashing rain and howling wind.. it was a humbling experience for all 6 of us, the winning score was 26 points.. One lad (HC 18) scratched 7 holes in a row and came home with 12 points, The course is stunning but in those conditions its an absolute animal, it ate us up and spat us out, the wind always seemed to be in our faces or side on, never with us for some reason. I would love to play it again in better conditions.

We then played Strandhill yesterday (with a stinking hangover and very little sleep) in near perfect conditions. Absolute gem of a course, so well designed and maintained...couldnt recommend it high enough, it left a lasting impression on every player and we all wanted to play it again, its not the longest course in the world but it is very special. It probably helped that we all played very well and shot very goof scores, especially when compared with the previous day. The only disappointing aspect of Strandhill was the pace of play, took us nearly 6 hours to complete the round. Think there was a ladies competition on or something that day and we were literally waiting 10 minutes on every teebox.

Wasnt the worst actually, driver to right edge of fairway..then took a 3 wood and cut the corner going up the hill, still needed another shot to get me on but I got a point out of it. The wind wasn't as bad on that hole as there was some protection from the hill but the two holes before it were killers

Strandhill is just a super course in a class setting, suppose it helps that I won the only time I played there, must get back before the end of the summer.

Its a beautiful course and you definitely need to play it again. I would have walked in after three holes if the wind and rain was that bad. The lads in the pro shop would have sorted you out with another round in better playing conditions. Totally unfair to charge someone a massive whack and then expect them to play in that muck weather!

Not so sure the lads would have been that helpful, there was also a load of yanks teeing off around the same time, they were hardly expected to return some other day. If clubs in Ireland started giving back money due to inclement weather then they might as well close down. The weather on Saturday was windy and miserable golfing conditions right enough but no worse than a lots of days along the coast of Ireland. You pay your money and take your chance.
Betcha it was as bad if not worse during the Atlantic coast challenge during the week, part and parcel of the links experience.

That's it, sure we knew ourselves what we were in for heading down and teeing off and we were dying to play the course regardless of the inclement weather, hardly fair to walk off the course cos of the rain and expect a refund, we live in Ireland after all not California.

It was a serious test of the game, which we all failed miserably :o, but enjoyed nonetheless as the course is magnificent. We just enjoyed Strandhill more and the weather had a huge part to play in this as the scoring was a lot better. Its just human nature to prefer courses you have played better in and we all played really well in Strandhill and really poorly in Rosses Point.
