i have a trolley jack and im jacking it from the centre part under the engine, why is the jack making lots of noise and releasing some of the weight? its a 2 tonne jack?

Use axle stands if you're getting underneath it. If I'm taking off the wheels I always put them under the sills.

You can never be too careful.

Edit: if the jack isn't holding the car make sure the valve is fully closed. I have a 2 tonne jack and it easily lifts my 1600 kg S60. It does groan a bit.

If you are only lifting one corner, then no probs.

The seals in the jack could be gone.

I seen a few trolley jacks that spend a lot of time in the shed, rarely used, fail.

    Use axle stands.

As already stated, if the jack keeps lowering make sure the release valve is fully closed.
