    I have no idea what forum this should be in so feel free to move.

    If you are selling something via standard post, can you obtain proof of postage? If the item gets lost, are you covered by insurance or is this only if the item has been sent by registered post?

    Proof of postage is just that - proof of purchase and all you can claim is recovery of the postage costs.
    Registered post carries an element of insurance depending on the declared value.

    The An Post website has full details.

    Thanks Peter Sweet Beefsteak. I did have a look at the An Post website but didn't find it very clear.

    In that case, if someone is sending something with any value, they should go with registered post as the standard post will only refund postage costs of maybe €7?

    Standard post : no proof of postage, no insurance for the item posted. Some compensation can be paid but is limited to the postage, packaging and a little bit extra if there are other costs. Compensation may be paid as stamps.

    Registered post : . If you want proof of postage of registered post you can request a Certificate of Posting
    Registered post is insured as follows:
    (a) The amount of compensation payable shall be no greater than the value declared by the sender or €25.39 if no
    value has been declared.
    (b) Subject to Condition 16 (3) (c) and 16 (3) (d) and 16 (4) the compensation payable may not exceed the least of the replacement value of the article lost or the amount of the damage sustained or the value of the contents as shown in the Certificate of Posting (if applicable).
    (c) Unless otherwise provided in these terms and conditions, in no event may the amount of compensation exceed €350.
    (d) The compensation payable in respect of a Registered Postal Packet:
    (i) addressed to anywhere outside Europe (being a Postal Packet other than a Parcel) is limited to €35, being a Parcel is limited to €100 plus Charges paid;
    (ii) addressed to Europe excluding United Kingdom and Northern Ireland is limited to €150 plus Charges paid;
    (iii) addressed to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland is limited to €320, plus Charges paid.
    Note there are exclusions to what's covered by the insurance, e.g. damage out of the control of An Post, customs delays, exceptionally fragile goods, documents.
    For full T&Cs see Single Piece Mail Terms and Conditions for Universal Services

    For Registered post within Ireland you can buy additional insurance
    Additional insurance is available for items posted within the Republic of Ireland. A charge of €4 is applicable for cover up to €1,500 and a charge of €5 for cover up to €2,000.

    go with registered or swift,both are recorded delivery and are tracked,one needs a signature on delivery and one does not,the swiftpost item.

    There is a green document you can get signed to prove postage , but this will be no use if the buyer claims non-delivery.

    I have sent parcels in the post and the PO gave me a tracking number even though the parcel was not registered .

    If the package is a parcel it comes with tracking as standard but no insurance.

    As said already standard cannot be tracked registered can. But in the case of a paypal claim both are useless as the only information anpost will provide is that the item was delivered to a certain country on a certain day. Paypal require the exact address, name of who signed etc. You may be able to get the name of who signed for it with anpost (with some difficulty) But paypal insist on getting the exact address something was delivered to for claims which anpost will not provide.

    Also for insurance sending outside the EU if the item has any real value it's pointless I have often sent packages costing 40 euro or more to post only to be told the maximum insurance I can put on it is 35euro absolutely ridiculous. But then again anpost are really the only place to ship items here unless you are running a business so like a lot of other companies in this country they can charge and set whatever rules they want.

    And they are also very slow to update the tracking I have sent stuff to people who have emailed saying they received what I had sent a week later the tracking would still not have been updated.

    You can get a Certificate of Posting, which is just proof that you posted the item.

    I had problems with paypal before and was told by anpost customer service they could not provide anything like this. Do you need to get this when you post the actual item?

    I got these a couple of time, just ask at the counter.
    I don't post that many items so don't know what the official policy is.

    Ok thanks but just a warning to anyone using paypal no matter what proof you have 99% of time they will side with the buyer no matter what you do or say.

    Sorry I just noticed that's just proof of postage it's not proof that the buyer actually received what you sent which is what paypal wants.

    This is not the case for parcels. All parcels sent by An Post come with tracking as standard.

    I sent a package standard on Friday and cannot see any way of tracking it? It comes with a code but it is completely different to the code you get when posting registered.

    Packages cannot be tracked standard. Only Standard Parcels can.
