I have a goldfish that has grown to be quite a size - about 6 inches, hes nearly 10years old now. We have never used a filter in any of his tanks and have relied on partial water changes, and just generally not overfeeding and keeping the tank clean. Now that hes moved yet again to a bigger tank - I reckon its high time we got some filtering going but am completely baffled by the selection! Id ideally like something that doesnt have to be plugged in.

Are ceramic filters sufficient? It has been suggested I use both an undergravel filter and a ceramic filter.

    What do you think?

You really need a proper, electric filter, and a tank of at least 150-200l.
