Water charges VAT ?

We got our first water bill today.

I see that the bill shows "exempt" for VAT charges. Why is this ?

Our electricity, gas, telephone, UPC and bin services all charge VAT. Why is there no VAT charge for water ?

I wonder about the basis for no VAT charge as I suspect that we could get hit for that in the future if the present exemption is not properly founded.

14(2) of Schedule 1 of VAT acts provides exemption from supply of water by local authorities and Irish water. The exemption for Irish water was added by Section 67 Finance Act (No. 2) 2013.

    Very good. Thanks for that.

I suppose I am really wondering now if that exempted status might be done away with some day and or some EU genius declares that we are out of order in not charging VAT ! I won't worry about it unless it happens :)
