Do you think benefits should be cut like the U.K people poll think?

Should be halved in my opinion. Might make people think about training or emigrating to find work and not to pop out a kid with no skills to get a council house. The working people on decent wages are getting taxed to absolute bits with a substantial amount going towards welfare.

That's all very well, but where will you hide, when the demons come?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,973 ✭✭✭RayM

No. Cutting people's welfare payments won't result in the creation of more jobs. It'll just make poor people poorer. And this country has already lost far too many people to emigration.

Just count yourself lucky that you have a job, and don't be worrying about what other people are getting. Don't sneer at people less fortunate than yourself. Don't reduce them to crude stereotypes. Don't punch downward. I guarantee you, it'll make you a happier (and maybe even a nicer) person.

Yes they should by at least 30% ,but only in conjunction with severe Public pay cuts (Politicans included ) .

They're already there, you just need to look a bit harder.

You have to consider weather or not people can emigrate, their situation may not suit emigration.

This idea that people have a child to get rent allowance is daft.

There are better ways to reduce the public service bill.

One thing the DSP could is more proactive in determining if people are actually looking for work and also working with people to see that they find work, part time or full time. Explain to them what benefits they can receive on a low income.

Certainly the DSP and Dept of Jobs could work together to reduce the unemployment rate for those under 25, all of whom are on a lower JSA/JSB payment. And may not even qualify for payment. Makes you think that those on less than 100 euro per week have the highest rate of unemployment.

Also JSA is means tested so it does reduce depending on the situation. JSB is a standard rate for 9 months, which you pay into via PRSI. You must be actively looking to get work to receive both payments.

Let's not forget the wealthy who avail of benefits they can otherwiae well afford.

Not their fault though, it's their entitlement.

People who's on the welfare 10+ years should be cut

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 ErogenousJones

Like all things it is situational. Some people deserve less, some people need more, sweeping cuts tend to be similar to approaching brain surgery with a hammer.

Sure am looking forward to watching people get angry in this thread though.

If your work doesn't give sick pay and you go to claim illness benefit you get nothing for 6 days. For most cases you have recovered by then!

Not so many of us can afford to drop a weeks wages. This is not a good situation for workers.

If you are long term unemployed you get a 25% Christmas bonus.

I'd cut the second to improve the first

Ah right so that's how jobs are created by people wanting one... And here I though it was due to demand for products or services paid for with money. Please tell the rest of the class when you remove SW money from the economy how will they replace that and how will that not lead to actually further reduce the amount of jobs.

Welfare Fraud should be tackled ofcourse, but to put it in context, here's how much it costs Britain:

    Welfare Fraud: £3.9 Billion
    Tax Avoidance/Evasion/Non-payment: £119.4 Billion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Junkyard Tom

Or how about they stop giving tens of billions in corporate tax breaks, make companies that pay little or no tax pay their fair share, enact legislation that would see the working poor get a living wage so they don't see their kids go hungry, double or triple investment in jobs for people where the working poor might actually benefit, and then go after the people on benefits.

Delighted that the people posting thus far seem to have intelligent thoughts! Usually on here it's morons throwing around terms such as "scroungers".

No of course benefits shouldn't be cut, politicians love to incite drama against people on welfare because the little people then can fight (metaphorically) with each other, whilst the politicans can get up to whatever they like ;).

Where did you get the £150 billion figure? The official tax gap figure for 2012-13 is £34 billion in total including all evasion/non-payment/aviodance

    Is £119.4bn alright

Apologies about the £150bn original post- dunno where I got that ha

There is also apparently £16bn in benefits that people are entitled to but don't claim for

I'm not sure about cutting any one payment, because people receiving just one payment can struggle.

But there should be a cap where people are in receipt of a few different payments.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,951 ✭✭✭frostyjacks

Would definitely be in favour of a cap. Also, replace cash payments with food and clothing stamps to try and make sure our money isn't being spent on booze and fags. Although I'm sure they'll find a way.

Fair enough. I'm a fan of Richard Murphy in general but you just can't take it on faith, claims to measure something which remains hidden. I'd say it's closer to the truth than the official 34 billion.

Here's the official tax gap report

    https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=ScicVcaqBIqlsAH44IXYDg&url=https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/364009/4382_Measuring_Tax_Gaps_2014_IW_v4B_accessible_20141014.pdf&ved=0CCMQFjAA&usg=AFQjCNGhZSoKKmWR6vJXc6WJsjCIgf418g
Thanks for clearing that up. And apologies for the long link

If that's cut does that mean it will in turn reduce the amount of income tax for workers?

If so, I'm for a cut. If not, nah...

All fair enough except when you see nearly half your wages been taxed and while you slave in a job paying high creche fees then you see someone down the road not working but getting creche fees for free and living away happily.

Maybe not cutting it but its too generous and gives no incentive to actually go out and find work.

Cut it by 40% bring in lots of inspector s. Sort the fraudsters out. There should be big payments for identifying the fraudsters. 2500 cash straight into your account once he is identified leaving for work...

For me there is a big difference between somebody who has worked since school/college and lost their job due to downturn etc. As opposed to intergenerational unemployment where grandparents to grandkids sign on for life it would seem. Where as the poor fecker who worked for 10-15 years only get 9 months before being tested.

Also this **** of paying for kids in another country is just ridiculous, technically that money would never make it back into our system.

If you think those companies contribute or pay "little or nothing" in Tax, you're severely wrong.

Ireland would be in the dark ages if it wasn't for the tax breaks that brings in the big companies to this country. It's probably the only decent decision any government ever made.

Yes. I know this for a fact. Whatever you say you are wrong. I am 100% sure of this.

Some people not everyone as I don't know everyone on social welfare.

Can you post a link from the department of social protection showing which supplementary welfare benefit this falls under?

No. But I seen first hand someone with 3 kids not working who drops her kids into a creche.

    And is paying nothing.

Well yes but would you be happy to sit on the dole? When people talk about work or ask what you do for a living you would probably feel like crap. Plus when the creche subsidy runs out it would be hard raising children on benefits. Not the happy life you think the clown down the road is living.

Is it strange that when asked about tax, the thread turned to benefits? What about all the other things tax goes towards? Emergency services, education, environmental health, police and justice system. We live in a first world country and that's expensive.

You can't have a great country and not want to pay for it.

Increase tax on the rich. Who else can afford it? If you can't live well on €100,000, then you have a problem managing money and wouldn't live any better on a million.
