    Hi.

I have 3 pieces of wood that I want to cut to make some shelves for a garden shed, trouble is no-one seems prepared to cut them for me.

I love in Ratoath and have tried B&Q Swords, Clonee Sawmills and about a dozen other places who all said no for various reasons incl. Insurance (lol) and health and safety as well as other reasons such as the wood has to be bought there for them to do it.

I could buy wood and have it cut but the whole idea behind this was to upcycle/recycle and reduce waste. Plus I'm a novice (at best) DIYer so it's kinda important for me to feel I'm doing something with these of wood to prolong their usage.

Anyone any suggestions where I could get this done?

Unfortunately, I'm not sure anyone will without you buying something from them first!

Have you looked into tool hire for doing it yourself? You can get a circular or jig saw for about €20 a day, I think, but maybe someone else knows of a location that would be willing to do it for you.

You want someone from a DIY store to go to your place to cut some wood for you? If you want wood cut at home hire a saw or a carpenter.

And your expectancy was what exactly ? Surely you would have assumed you would need to bring the wood with you, where ever you were heading ???

In fairness the op said : bought there not brought there!

Well thanks for all your help folks. Had I wanted smart comments I'd have posted in After Hours (Sean you're excused btw).

I'm a DIY noive (at best). I did google this before I posted on here and found numerous references online (incl. a boards.ie reference) that B&Q did it for 50c per cut - whether the wood was bought there or not. When I rang them however they said they didn't do it.

As for hiring someone - yes, I'm sure carpenters would be queuing up to cut 3 small pieces of wood.

I've not handled an electric saw before hence my seeking help. I'm actually sorry I bothered now. I've heard of Beer Snobs, I didn't know there were DIY Snobs?

No, that's not what I said.

Yes, I'm completely stupid. I thought they'd dismantle their saw, bring it my home, set it up there, cut the 3 small pieces of wood I have, then dismantle the saw again, bring it back to the store and reassemble it again for other customers to use on-site.

    And yes, I'm being sarcastic.

You can get glasses very cheaply now in Specsavers you know?

3 small pieces of timber to cut, any reason why you can't get a handsaw and cut them?

What size timber are they op? Id say your choices are to rent out the equipment needed and either cut it yourself of get somebody, like a friend on neighbour to do it. Btw have you ever hanged shelves before? Can be more tricky than cutting the wood.

They're relatively thick and I wouldn't be confident enough to keep a cut line straight enough over the length of the wood, not that they're that long, just as they'll going against a straight wall and if the cut isn't true they won't be right. Probably not even explaining that really well!

Yeah, I think I'll try that, thanks. I honestly didn't know you could rent things like that out. It'll be their shortest rental ever. Lol.

Pick up a hand saw in any DIY store for €10 - €15. If your going to do any DIY this is a must. Then get some scraps / off cuts of timber and practice. Lots of you tube videos too. It's not too hard to get a straight cut with a sharp hand saw.

I would be known for having a range of power tools, but often just use a hand saw for quick cuts.

You could ask someone in your nearest men's shed..

Apologies Butter, I probably should get specs. Missed that completely. And to compensate for my "thickness" i'll cut the wood for ya as a freebie, if you can get it to my place.

    I'll send you a PM now ;)

Actually I am also looking for someone to have some angle cut for my timbers.

I am looking at B&Q website now and if you click on 'B&Q Liffey Valley'. You'll see 'Wood Cutting' listed on the information and facilities list.

I'll may try it this weekend.

I'm sure you'll find that the cutting service only applies to wood bought in-store though.
