Im starting my EDT lessons next week and i'm wondering if I need to get insured on one of my parents cars to practice in-between them? How much would insurance cost for someone my age; 17? and whats the best way about getting insured, i.e. named on parents insurance or solo?

Best thing to do is get insured on your parents car. Then (hopefully) this time next year, you will have your full licence, 1yr driving experience done and you'll be one year older.

Depending on your parents and your own details, insurance quotes will vary. Most of my friends were between €500 and €800 when they went on their parents policy.

That sounds allot better than I thought! Both of my parents have no penalty points and haven't claimed but I was expecting it to be between €1000/2000.

I was gonna get my own car last year when I was 17 and has a learners permit - €5500 for insurance on a Toyota Corolla! I went on my parents policy for €800 and a year later I had my full licence, driving experience etc and that quote went down to €2200 :) Still an awful lot to pay, but it is what it is - insuance for young drivers is cruel.

Unless you own your own car, your only option is to go onto your parents policy as a named driver. Taking out your own policy isn't an option, if you don't own a car.

Getting insured to drive on a car that you can practice your driving in is a very good idea. The more practice driving you do in between lessons, the odds get better of you passing your test on the first go.

When it comes to cost, your parents need to ring up their insurance company and find out how much it will be to add you on to their policies. As they are the policy holders, the insurance companies will only talk to them, they won't talk to you.
