Real World High Mileage - XJ v S80

It looks like it's finally time to change my beloved Volvo S60 D5 with over 330k miles on the clock. It's failed the NCT and whilst I can get it through on a retest I think it will cost a few hundred euro, and I don't want to spend that much as I had planned on changing it in a few months anyway. It's also almost 40k miles over a scheduled belt change. So it's time to start looking for a new car. Budget is up to €10k.

I do over 30k miles per year as a mix of back road and motorway driving, so I need a little bit of comfort. The sensible choice in my head would be to pick up a 2007ish Volvo S80 D5. They're conformable, look good, the D5 engine is reliable and my local mechanic can look after one of these.

But.......I'm a Jag fan (who isn't) and I am tempted to go for an XJ 350 diesel. I can live with the extra tax, insurance and fuel costs over the Volvo, but I am worried about major bills cropping up. I know these cars are more expensive to maintain and my local mechanic is probably not going to be able to look after it but my question is does anyone else run a high mileage car of this type? Would I be just asking for trouble if I buy a ten year old luxobarge for less than €10k and expect it to do 30k miles per year?
