I stayed in long island city queens not in manhattan but only a 10 - 15 min sunway ride to times sq and half the price if your looking for something cheaper. Try air bnb can get some good downtown deals on that also.

You could also try new jersey on the PATH train/subway line (24 hour link to NY).

As others said, if you don't have to stay in Manhattan, just look at the subway/PATH/NJ Transit train lines and pick a spot close to a handy station.

If you don't mind an hour train ride, you could even stay in a nice spot like Princeton, NJ, which is a great place to walk around after a day in the city, with plenty of nice restaurants and some high-end shopping.

Try 'The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel'. Its right in the middle of the action, great location. We stayed last September and it was €382 for 3 nights for 2 people which is good in New York. Hotel was nice as well, but you dont go to New York to stay in the hotel!

It will be very expensive because of the time of year you are going. I was there during the year & stayed in Hilton Garden Inn on 8th Ave and got a excellent price for 5 nights. You should have a look on their website. That is where we found the deal. The location is very good too

Airbnb in Brooklyn would be my bet, williamsburg for example would be 15 minutes to union square.
