Discount On Used Car List Price From Dealer?

    Hi.
I have only bought one car ever and that was 8 years ago so forgive me if this is a naive question...
Anyway I have seen a car that I like which is a second hand Audi A4 s line that is listed for 16.5k.
How much leeway would there no for getting a discount on this price would you think?
It is a used car dealer as opposed to private seller.
I have a budget of around 15k which I wouldn't really be able to stretch to 16.5k.
I have an A3 currently which has failed the nct due to emissions.it's likely it has engine issues so I don't think any trade in would be possible?

Thanks in advance for any opinions on this.

I would normally expect 10% off and would start by offering 20% off.

What age is your own car? Depending on the age and the issue it may be worth something to the garage. What engine is in your car and what miles has it covered?

    Thanks for the reply.
My own car is a 1.6 petrol 2003 with 145k miles on the clock.
A garage guy I brought it to seems to think there is a leak in an engine valve which would cost 700-800 to repair.
I'm guessing the garage will have no interest in it?

Anything you get for the A3 as a trade-in will just be the discount off the A4. You are better off not bringing it into the equation as it's worth very little to a dealer.

Also there is no set percentage around the discount off a used car, it really depends on how keenly priced it is against other similar cars. There are also other factors to take into account like how much the dealer bought the car for, how long they have it in stock and how much demand there is for the model. So you need to do some research on how much these cars are selling for before going in with an offer.
