Beginner / Improver Irons

Starting to play again, but my irons are a cheapo set that are about 10 years old so wouldn't mind replacing them.

I'm a high handicapper trying to get back into it after 4 years out so would want something that's easy to hit and pretty forgiving. Don't want a brand new set, 3 or 4 year old is fine if they are considered a decent set (don't want to spend massive amounts of cash).

Any ideas of what brand and models I should be looking for in my search? :)

    ping g series

  • Don't mean to hijack the thread but could anyone tell me a decent set for a 13 hcap? Not the best ball striker in the world it has to be said. Was looking at something like the Mizuno JPX825.

They are amazing and will really suit your swing ;)

Look there are 3.5 types of clubs Blades/Musclebacks, Pressed Cavity Backs and Game Improvement large cavity clubs. If your not a good ball striker buy any of the GI clubs.

OP - You can't go wrong with Ping G Series (Or some of the I series from Ping). Even at that, there isnt huge difference between the different and more recent versions, ie g20, g25, g30... If you are on a budget the earlier versions can be picked up cheap and still are a nice club (g5, g10). I would definitely go the second hand route for all your clubs, driver, hybrid etc included. You could put together a nice second hand set of clubs on a reasonable budget. My own set with the exception of a putter is all second hand. Any idea what budget approx you'd be thinking for the full set? For example, you could find a g5 / g10 driver for about 60 euro, set of irons for 160 approx, putter you might pick one up for 50, then a hybrid / wood and you're away. Thats if the irons come with a sand wedge (Usually 56 degree). Infact you probably have a putter already and maybe a wood / hybrid from your current set.

When looking them up online, check golfbidder.co.uk for similiar brand and condition to see how the prices compare to donedeal / adverts etc.

@Rory Broad Beggar: Ive tried the JPX 825 and they are a really nice club. They are a strong club though, I find my distances compared to a ping are much longer depending on the contact (Im a 17/18 handicap). But the Mizuno have nice feel, look good, in my opinion perhaps not as forgiving as the ping g series though (Perhaps because of the Ping having a more pronounced sole).

Here is a review article on them:

Yea I have a decent putter and a decent driver (a Cobra) at the moment (hand me downs from my dad!).

It's just the irons that are old and a bit meh that I'd want to replace first.

Golfbidder site looks great, but would be even better if the euro wasn't so crap against the pound. :(

What you can use it for though is to compare its prices towards adverts and dondeal, find a good deal on clubs that way, you'll know how much they are worth / cost on golfbidder so you don't pay over the odds for a set.

If its just irons I would try out the Ping G Series, even a set of i3, g5 or g10 (few years old, but can be got cheaper than g20 / g25). I see people playing off single digit handicaps using irons that are 10 years old or more... Youd be best to try hit a few shots with them first though, even if your friends or anyone you know has a set and hit a few balls to see how they feel.

  • Anyone know if any of the shops or driving ranges in Dublin have a decent range of demo clubs?
