The organisers of the SSE Airtricity Dublin Marathon have made available the full archive of all results of all Dublin marathons from the first year in 1980 onwards. People have been looking for this for years and I was delighted to be able to see my 1981 time in all its glory.

The years from 1980 to 1999 are in pdf files. I spoke to the race director recently and he told me that although they were able to scan hard copies of old results, there was a lot of manual work required too. Well done and thanks to the people responsible.

    http://sseairtricitydublinmarathon.ie/results-archive-2/

The years 2000 onwards are searchable separately.

Thanks for posting! Just had a really quick look - definitely worth going back to in more detail.

    608 sub 3 in 1981
    580 sub 3 in 1982
    693 sub 3 in 1983
    536 sub 3 in 1984
    613 sub 3 in 1985

    162 sub 3 in 1998
    177 sub 3 in 1999

I think there were 300-odd last year.

Presumably, there were fewer runners in the late 90s too though.

Haven't there been a few course changes over the years? Be interesting to see if times changed as the course changed.

I also had a quick look through. It seems that the Median finish time from 1980-1990 was around 3:40-3:50 (generally getting a little slower each year). It's hard to get an exact figure each year as there seem to be a fair few missing from the end on a few of the years....Seems like there was a 6hour cut off for the fist few years and a 6;30 cut off after that?

On a seperate point, there are a couple of awl lads in our club who often tell me they used to run as 3 hour pacers. Sure enough this proves them correct. Back before the days of Garmins, there they are running 2:59:20 one year and 2:59:30 another. Pretty spot on pacing!!

Jesus that's some standard. Wasn't there only something like 2000 starters in 1981? And 608 ran sub 3. Close to 30% of the field. Don't think you'd get anything close to that in any marathon nowadays.

You have to bear in mind that:
    1. It was the a great time for road racing in Ireland with high standards.
    2. There was no one traveling to do a marathon overseas that are of a good standard. I would expect there to be a similar number of sub 3 runners there today if people were not traveling to Amsterdam, Berlin, Frankfurt etc etc.

Noticed this a while back and was able to look up my dad's results. He definitely wasn't one of the sub-3s but it was great to be able to find him in there as we were never quite sure of his times. Hard to be certain because they only did gross times in the old days but I think I might have beaten his PB in my last outing. :pac:

How do you find out the race number from the results so that you can get the certificate?

You can get it from the TDL results. You can pick the year in the top right.

If you search by bib number, you will get result and/or the cert but if you just search by name, it brings up all the details except for bib number. Pity.
