Mac backup system

    I have a 2011 Macbook Pro with a 1TB hard drive that I put in myself a couple of years ago. I use time machine to do an encrypted back up the mac every week or so onto an external hard drive.

    Having looked at a lot of the new Macbooks I got thinking that if the one I have was lost or stolen, the replacement wouldn't have the hard drive size to be able to restore from the backup as many are 250-500GB SSD these days.

    I'm wondering am I better off saving the backups as unencrypted so that I'd have access to the files if I ever needed them from another machine?

    Are you backing up nuclear launch codes? If not, unencrypted is probably fine.

    No the codes are on a post it note. I just don't want all my stuff available to someone who breaks in and steals the laptop and hard drive. At least the laptop has a password.

    I'm guessing that the majority of the 1TB drive is filled with media (videos and music). I've set my time machine to only back-up system folders and photos as the videos and music can be downloaded again from the cloud. It makes it much faster to perform backups and also to restore should I need to do so. You'll also have the ability to restore to a machine with a smaller internal SSD in the future.
