I don't have one specifically in my employment contract other than for it to read "a term as is legal"

    What might that be?
I have been in my current emploi almost 1 year.

    How often are you paid?

If monthly, the notice period is typically one month. If it's weekly, then it may be one week.

Sorry Tom but this is a common story told but has no connection to the law; the minimum notice period the have to give you is:

    Duration of employment Minimum Notice
    13 weeks to 2 years 1 week
    2 years to 5 years 2 weeks
    5 years to 10 years 4 weeks
    10 years to 15 years 6 weeks
15 years or more 8 weeks

    More details on Citizeninformation.

You on the other hand have to only give a week's notice if employed beyond 13 weeks.
An employer shall, subject to the right of an employee to give counter-notice under section 10 of the Act of 1967 or to give notice of intention to claim redundancy payment in respect of lay-off or short-time under section 12 of that Act, be entitled to not less than one week's notice from an employee who has been in his continuous employment for thirteen weeks or more of that employee's intention to terminate his contract of employment.
