Device versus Phone and a question about speakers

I am planning on doing a major drive around Ireland later this month. I was going to buy a new Garmin for the trip but I am a bit torn because I think my phone can do a good job as a satnav.

The problem is my phone speaker is not loud enough. Its a htc one s and the volume all the way up cannot be heard if the radio is on. I have a parrot handfree system in the car. Is there anyway to make the phone GPS commands run through the car speakers like when I am making a call?

I have an iphone 4s too if that offers anything better.

    Thanks for any advice!
