Well 40 miles a day is 15,000 miles a year, which is definitely diesel territory. At your budget it will be hard to find a decent one, so I'd suck up the higher running costs (and lower resale value) and stick with petrol.

Unless you're prepared to go to BMW/Audi/Mercedes/Volvo and the higher running costs that go with these cars, it's going to be very hard to find something with leather.

Your daily mileage is at the lower end of borderline diesel, given your limited budget I think you should stick to petrol as you will get more car for your money and probably a cleaner car too.

Have a look at something like a Passat 1.4 TSi Highline which has plenty of poke because it has a turbo:

Petrols ones are good, biggest problem is ESP failure in the S40s (which is expensive) and they're a bit heavy on fuel. Parts are expensive but I reckon they're more reliable than the premium German cars.

    Kia Ceed/Hyundai i30

You'd get one within that budget too
