Engine is gone in my Toyota Verso and advice needed

    Hi there,
The engine in my 05 Toyota Verso went a few days ago. I noticed a red light appeared as I was driving and I pulled off the motorway. Found a garage and the mechanic had a look. He said it wasn’t anything major and just an electrical diagnostic thing. Car stopped driving the next day and another mechanic looked at it and said the engine is now gone. The oil dried out and then filters got blocked or something onto that effect.
This mechanic can get me a Toyota Avensis 08 engine for 850 euros.
Any thoughts on the price and if this will suit my car?
    Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you ran out of oil (and the red light that was coming on before was probably the oil pressure light, it comes on when braking and then goes off again or else starts flickering at idle), those engines are noted for burning oil (I'm assuming yours is petrol) though an 05 car shouldn't suffer unless it's been to the moon and back in terms of mileage and/or has been abused.

If the filters got blocked it's possible that it failed because you didn't service it when you were supposed to (every 15k km or 1 year - whichever is more frequent).

Yes in theory an 08 Avensis engine will fit (the Avensis and Verso share the same chassis), again assuming it's petrols we're talking about.

    Avensis/Corolla Verso?

    What engine... 2.2?

    1.6 VVT-I I'd say.

I keep forgetting where I am and that people wouldn't pay/cringe about the tax on a 2.2 :(

For 850 it would want to be lowish miles, I know of a 1.6vvti sold with 6230 verified miles for about the €1100 mark, delivered

05 would have been 2.0 D-4D anyway, but the 2.2 was about €6k more than 1.6 petrol before the VRT reshuffle. I only ever sold 1. It was quite a nice yoke to go.
Same engine as the RAV4, 2.2 135bhp and a good few torques
    €850 includes fitting I'd imagine.

I don't blame the owner with these cars.

Checking oil level and coolant level on a Corolla Verso is a pain in the ar*e.

The coolant reservoir is completely black and it's impossible to see through to check the level. The dip stick enclosure is bent awkwardly so the oil gets wiped off the dipstick as you pull it (at least on the 2.0 D4D)

Depends on the motor. The 2AD-FHV has 175 hp. The 2AD-FTV has 134 hp :)

I'd be kinda pissed with the first mechanic- he mustn't have checked anything much at all !

We didn't sell the 180ps version here.
We sold the 135. Which was the same as in the Verso.

I think it must be the UK spec Versos that have the 2.2 180 motor.

I was at a garage a few years ago and a group of travellers got really interested in the Verso. "Is she a 180 aye?" :pac:

The petrol VVTi engines up to mid 2005 had a design fault where by the pistons could overheat and block the oil drains, this cause them to burn oil, they had an extended warranty on these engines, they require constant checking, I even know someone who claimed someone stole their oil on a Corolla. check that the replacement engine is not an oil burner the same (check year)

Yes it's a 1.6 VVT. The first mechanic was an ejit and didn't have a clue.

Anyway he told me it was safe to drive and so i did. He did a check for the oil and it was fine (so he said)
But the 2nd mechanic said that the filters were blocked and that's why the engine failed.
This guy knew the score straight away and could see that the oil filters were blocked.
The moral of the story is I should have got it serviced during the year. Also, I didn't check it for oil.
But I would have assumed that a warning light would have come on earlier but never did.

Anyway the damage is done now so I'm just waiting for the 2nd mechanic to put in the new engine. Oh it's a Toyato Corolla 1.6 08 engine for 850 and about 350 labour. Not sure of the mileage on the new engine. He said it's low mileage.

So when I get the new engine how often should I put in oil? How often do I need to check it for oil? Is there some kind of additive added to oil in the garage to stop it burning so fast?
    Thanks for all your comments.

check the oil weekly and based on mileage , you will see how much is being used and should be able to go to monthly, checking anything beyond monthly can be asking for trouble.

Oil and filter every 15000km or once a year, whichever comes first.
If the new engine is 08 it shouldn't have any excessive oil burning issues.

They didn't do a 1.6 Corolla in 08, so it's probably a Corolla Verso or Avensis engine.

Depending on your mileage, monthly is more than enough. I'd check it every 2,000 km and if you're happy it's not using much then I'd check every 3-4000 km. There won't be any problems with oil burning on an 08 VVT-i anyway but if there was a problem it's highly unlikely to appear until you're past 100k miles / 160k km. What's more important is to get it serviced every 15k km or once a year, whichever is the more frequent!!

The 175 bhp 2.2 was only sold in SR guise in the UK - most 2.2 diesels there are 135 bhp. A good thing as the higher powered version is well known for its head gasket failure!

The problem with the early VVti engines burning oil is the piston skirt design, they have gone through 3 redesigns now with the oil return holes in the piston skirt getting progressively larger every time.
the new ones have 8 large holes in the oil control ring grooves, the early ones had 4 small ones.
Serviced well these engines are strong, I'd service them before 15k as well.
The blocked oil pickup is probably what starved the engine of oil and caused the failure.
Servicing often will lessen the chance of the pickup sludging and blocking.
You should get the new engines oil pickup checked before fitting for peace of mind.
