Coolant seems to be gone in avensis. Can I just walk into a garage and buy any kind or is there a specific type I need. I cannot see anything in the plastic tank and when I open it.

If you don't know what's in there it's time to swap it all out.
You can just fill up with distilled water for now. Or even tap water.
Then have a mechanic do a coolant flush with fresh coolant.

Distilled water will be fine for now, but it would worry me considerably more to know what exactly "gonned" it.

Toyota coolant is usually the long life red stuff.

    Is your rad shot?

More likely the water pump is shot on these at this age and assuming average mileage.

Either way the root of the problem needs to be sourced and rectified before there is further damage caused

Does the water pump commonly go in these? I have one a year older with 100k miles. What would be the average mileage to expect from a pump?
The coolant in mine is the original stuff (pink). I probably should get it changed.

I sold mine an 04 with 167k miles and pump never gave trouble and got coolant changed once.

You should be fine for a while at 100K. It not something I'd be looking to change unless it needed changing or you were doing some other work that meant no additional labour and there was 150K+ on the clock. They're not hard to change on these anyway.

I think mine was changed about 160K.

How were your gearbox bearings at 167K? ;-)

Parents' one is coming up to 168,000 miles, and still on the original water pump (it's a 1.8 but it's the same engine family). It is starting to burn a bit of oil, but nowhere near enough to make it an NCT failure.

Never had trouble with them in many ways it was a better built car than the 12 reg I traded it for!
