Buying my first car question.

Hi there everyone! I'm a 20 year old male and I'll be sitting my driving test in a couple weeks. I have never owned a car (for provisional) and I have a question I think might be a little silly.

If I buy a car now, do I have to insure it straight away? Or can I leave it parked outside my house for a month or two until I get my full license? I understand it has to be taxed and that I'm just curious about insurance.

    Thanks all :)

Technically I think it should have insurance just in case it spontaneously combusted and caused other cars to go on fire or the handbrake cable snapped and it rolled over someone etc. etc. I did have mine outside for about a month without it though, nothing ill came of it. If you could get it in to a driveway that would be ideal, if not it depends on how quiet the street is and how likely your neighbours are to report no insurance, which could be problematic.

As a fellow 20 year old in the exact same position Im just wondering does the car actually have to be taxed if its just sitting in the driveway/parking spot?

Also out of curiosity, have you gotten any insurance quotes?

So I don't have to have insurance? I could keep it in my garage?

Ah yeah it's a 1litre polo and I'm getting quotes from axa at around €2000 and €1500 from Britton.

If it's in your driveway, off the road it doesn't need NCT, tax or insurance. On the road then you need them all even if it's just parked up. I'm not sure about private carparks like in apartments, if they have gates I'd guess you don't need tax or NCT. But it's possible whoever manages the carpark requires insurance or even NCT or tax.

Garage would be perfect, you'd obviously need an insured driver to get it there but once it's off the road no insurance required. Of course if it was a high value car you'd still want it insured in case of theft.

I just have a cheap fiesta. One advantage to these cars, they're usually theft proof for all the wrong reaons :P:o
