Finding A Job

Hi, what I want to do first is secure a job in Canada either Vancouver, Alberta or even Toronto. How can I do that? Because on my resume it does say that I live outside of Canada and most places that you apply for will need you to be inside Canada so how will they know you are eligible to work in Canada. Any help would be highly appreciated.

Remove the bit where it says you live outside Canada?

I suppose I could do that but usually they ask for a telephone number or home address on most job applications.

Can work around the phone number bit anyway by taking a look at something like MagicJack. They've got an iOS/Android app available, and you can pay around $10 to register a Canadian number with it, which basically means anyone calling the number will ring your app. It's dead handy, and I recommend it for anyone living in Canada as a dirt cheap way to stay in touch with people back him.

For the address, that's a whole different kettle of fish, but you could conveniently just not include that bit?

Very few companies will employ someone without meeting them, so even if you hide the fact you are not in Canada, and they don't realise, they will probably try and ring you or call you in for an interview, which will be difficult.

Unless you have very specific skillset and applying for a related job, you will find it very difficult to get a firm commitment of a job offer without being there in person.

All true, however if you know when you're going to be heading to Canada you can tell them you're available for interview after a given date without going into specifics. No harm in giving it a go

It also depends on what kind of work you are looking for. If just looking for casual /temping work, you might as well wait until you get there. For more career-focused jobs, well, in my experience a lot of employers are put off hiring someone on a temporary work permit that's not tied to them.

I've been fortunate not to have to be in a position to look for work over here (been able to bring it with me), but are you obliged to tell them you're temporary? Obviously the SIN starting with 9 will give it away, but prior to that point, is telling them your situation a "must", or simply a "should"?

But don't you get the SIN once your enter Canada?

You do, but you're not going to be asked for a SIN until you're offered a job, which won't be until after an interview, which means you're already in Canada and have your SIN

Now that's what I call smart. I'll do that then. Thank you so much for your help. Thank you everyone else who replied to this thread. I appreciate it and I wish you all the best of luck.

I think it's pretty naive to think that the first time an employer will ask you about your immigration status is after a job offer, especially if you're CV has only Irish education and jobs in Ireland on it. Indeed, if you don't mention anything then they might just ignore your CV as they might assume that you don't have any status in Canada.

There's no right or wrong answer here I think. My opinion is to be upfront with potential employers about your status (and future intentions).

Canada could be heading for recession so employers will look to employ Canadians over a temporary foreign worker. I guess it depends on what your qualifications are.

    Orange pilled.
